What is HEARD?
HEARD is a free, online curriculum designed to help Christians communicate the message of Jesus to non-religious people in ways that are thoughtful, respectful, and compelling. It’s useful for college students, small group leaders, church planters, digital missionaries, and everyday Christians who want to love their neighbors well and speak meaningfully about faith.
Is this a Bible study?
Not in the traditional sense. While HEARD is rooted in Scripture and shaped by Jesus’ teachings, it’s more focused on communication, empathy, and engagement with today’s cultural realities than verse-by-verse study. It’s designed to help you apply your faith in conversations, relationships, and real-life contexts.
How long does it take to complete?
The course is divided into five units, each with 2–3 lessons. You can go at your own pace, whether that means one lesson a week or one unit a weekend. Each lesson includes a short video, reflection questions, and practical challenges that can be done individually or with a group.

Absolutely. HEARD works well for individual study or group settings. Each lesson includes built-in questions and discussion prompts, making it ideal for small groups, student ministries, leadership teams, or even church staff workshops.

Do I need any prior training or background to use this?
Nope. You don’t need a theology degree or experience in ministry. If you care about people and want to speak about Jesus in ways that build bridges instead of walls, you’re ready to begin.

About Landon Saunders and Heartbeat
Landon Saunders (1937 – 2023) was a beloved preacher, a pioneering communicator, and the founder and long‑time president of the Heartbeat radio ministry.
Believing the church has become too inwardly focused, Landon wanted to reach those outside the walls of the church, many of whom will not listen to messages that sound “religious.” Taking a cue from Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s notion of “a religionless Christianity,” Landon cast his messages in language familiar to his audiences.
Landon envisioned this curriculum, and before passing in 2023 requested that it be written. A significant amount of the content of the LISTEN section of these lessons is from presentations made Landon made during his ministry—Heartbeat.
Themes Landon consistently developed in his presentations included the value of every human being, relationship as the place where life grows or fails, and how to navigate the world in joy.
Heartbeat is a non‑profit continuation and evolution of Saunders' work, primarily expressed through a podcast, weekly reflections, curriculum, an d other media. The organization aims to advance Saunders’ vision of reaching beyond religious walls to affirm the value, dignity, and flourishing of every human being.
